OVERVIEW

Epilepsy in third world countries remains largely undiagnosed and untreated, mainly because of the lack of experienced doctors near where people live. Combined with the social stigma attached, it is not only a medical problem but also a social one. Hence, in regions like India, Africa, West-Asia and South America, there is a need is for less-experienced doctors and healthcare workers to be able to separate epilepsy from the other conditions which look like it. We have developed the world’s first app to do this, in collaboration with Dr Victor Patterson, the founder of Synapse Teleneurology, UK.

OBJECTIVE

Access to public health facilities in the developing nations is not only limited but also unavailable, in many regions of the World. Hence, our goal was to take disease diagnosis and its management, via healthcare workers, without the need for hospitals and doctors.

The App itself deploys a proprietary algorithm developed by Dr Victor Patterson, to report whether an episode of altered consciousness is due to epilepsy or to other conditions which can mimic epilepsy. The app was developed in Nepal, validated in India, and has been further used in India, Italy, Sudan, and Bolivia, with good results. The apps usefulness is supported by evidence of its effectiveness with publication of results in peer-reviewed journals such as Seizure and Epilepsy & Behavior. It has been used in over 600 patients.

We trained the health workers on the usage of the App and have rolled it out in multiple languages across seven countries.
